Over our years of hob Liverpool sales, we have had a huge number of customers ask the same questions. This is why we have created a handy hob Frequently asked question guide so you can be sure you are purchasing the perfect hob for your home!

What is a hob used for?

Hobs are available built on a cooker or as a singular appliance on its’ own. No matter the type of hob you choose, your hob is used for boiling, frying, steaming and other pan based cooking techniques. Each burner provides your pan with a direct source of heat so you are able to control what is heated and to what temperature. A hob is used to quickly heat your food in pans.

How does an Induction hob work?

Induction hobs are relatively new and highly advanced. They use magnetic technology to create energy and heat to the pan’s base. This means that when you remove the pan, the energy/heat no longer can be created which reduces energy and heat wastage, plus means that you are able to control the heat more easily. An induction hob works using magnets to direct heat to your pans.

Do I need to buy special pans for an Induction Hob?

Due to the technology used in an induction hob, you may be required to replace your current pans. This is because the magnetic technology inside requires iron or ferrous metal in your pans to be able to conduct the magnetic energy. To test if your pans are suitable, place a magnet near to the base of the pan. If it attracts then the pans are okay to use. Buying new, special pans for your new induction hob is advised.

Is an induction hob hard to clean?

A hob can get dirty rather quickly, especially an induction hob that shows each spillage and mark obviously due to the shiny surface. This may put some people off purchasing one, however an induction hob is easy to clean. Simply use a cloth when the hob is cool to remove any loose food, then use a damp and soapy cloth to clean any marks off.

Do electric hobs turn off automatically?

We can forget to turn our hobs off at home. Luckily, some induction hob manufacturers have listened and now included an auto switch off function in their hobs so when a pan is removed from a burner, the hob will turn off and no longer produce heat. This means that some electric hobs do turn off automatically, but they will remain hot for a while after.

Are gas hobs safe to use?

Gas hobs are renown for being dangerous due to the open flame that is present. However, gas hob manufacturers have looked into ways to improve their safety, such as including an emergency switch off button and fold down tops. Gas hobs are safe but only if you are sensible whilst cooking and follow manufacturer's guidelines when using one.

Do ceramic hobs scratch easily?

Like any glass surface, scratches and marks can appear. This is made worse when you are using metal pans and frequently cleaning, such as you do with a hob. This means ceramic hobs do scratch easily but damage like this can be avoided with the use of special glass cleaning cloths and using extreme care when using the hob.
